Hyaluronic acid injections

In recent years, the demand for wrinkle fillers has significantly increased. Resorbable implants are now frequently injected to reduce or erase wrinkles and reshape specific facial areas. Due to its excellent tolerance and natural integration into tissues, hyaluronic acid has become the treatment of choice for various areas such as lips, under-eye hollows, cheeks, nose, and hands.
The product is injected into the skin’s surface or deeper layers to correct wrinkles or volume loss. It is not a permanent implant but is progressively and completely absorbed by the skin. Hyaluronic acid is a regulated medical product and classified as a Class III implantable medical device according to the European Directive 93/42/EEC.

How Hyaluronic Acid Works and Its Properties ?

Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide found in the extracellular matrix of our tissues, mainly in joints (synovial fluid), the eye (vitreous humor), and the skin, which contains over 50% of the body’s total amount. Its strong hydrophilic properties (promoting tissue hydration and cohesion) and viscoelastic characteristics justify its use in various medical fields (rheumatology, ophthalmology, urology) and in aesthetic medicine for wrinkle filling since the late 1990s.

Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid :

  • Biocompatible : No species or tissue specificity, eliminating the need for pre-tests.
  • Fully bioresorbable : Minimizing the risk of significant and irreversible side effects.
  • Immediate effect : Thanks to its strong hydrophilic properties.

Hyaluronic acid can be synthesized via bacterial fermentation. Laboratories often optimize its structure by cross-linking hyaluronic acid chains to enhance the volumizing effect and reduce rapid degradation by hyaluronidase. As a result, an extensive range of hyaluronic acids is now available, offering a very natural correction that lasts from 9 to 18 months, depending on the product used.

For example, in the Allergan range: Juvederm Ultra 2 and Juvederm Volite are less volumizing products injected superficially to densify the dermis and treat fine lines, while Juvederm 3, 4, and Juvederm Voluma are denser products injected deeply to restore volume to the cheeks and chin area.

Before Hyaluronic Acid Treatment

Before any injection, a detailed consultation is carried out to assess if you have any contraindications (such as hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid, autoimmune diseases, pregnancy) and review previous injections to avoid any dangerous interactions.

A clinical exam will be conducted in a sitting position to evaluate the areas that need correction. Your goals will be discussed in conjunction with my expertise to define a realistic treatment plan and the appropriate product for the problem being treated.

An estimated cost of the treatment will be provided, along with an information and consent document. A prescription for an anesthetic cream, such as Emla, may be offered based on the sensitivity of the areas to be treated. A preventative anti-herpes treatment will be prescribed if you are prone to cold sores. Avoid aspirin or anti-inflammatory medications before the procedure to minimize the risk of bruising.

Hyaluronic Acid Treatment Procedure

The treatment is performed by Dr. Virginie Aimé in her office. The treatment area will be cleaned and disinfected. Your doctor will decide whether to use fine needles or cannulas for the injection. Cannula injections are less traumatic and less painful but may be less precise in certain cases.

Anesthesia is generally not required as most hyaluronic acid products contain a local anesthetic. The product is injected into the skin or deeper, depending on the area being treated and the density of the product used. Dr. Virginie Aimé uses a personalized injection technique tailored to each case for optimal results.

After the injection, the treated area is gently massaged to ensure even distribution of the product and optimal correction. Multiple areas can be treated in one session, and the treatment may also be combined with botulinum toxin injections.

After Hyaluronic Acid Treatment

Most patients resume normal activities immediately after treatment. Light makeup may be applied if necessary. Avoid facial treatments and environments with intense heat (saunas, steam rooms, UV cabins) for about 15 days.

Results of Hyaluronic Acid Injections

The effects of the injection are visible immediately, but it takes around 10-15 days to see the final results. This is the time needed for the hyaluronic acid to settle in the tissues and for any post-injection reactions to subside.

The results are natural; the product does not affect muscles and does not alter facial expressions. It simply corrects overly hollow areas, giving you a rested and rejuvenated appearance.

The longevity of the results varies based on your age, skin type, lifestyle (smoking, alcohol, sun exposure, stress), and the level of correction desired. Therefore, the amount of hyaluronic acid required may differ from one person to another.

Possible Side Effects

Hyaluronic acid is a natural, well-tolerated, and resorbable product. Therefore, the risks associated with its injection are minimal when performed by a qualified practitioner. However, incorrect use of certain hyaluronic acid products in certain areas can have serious consequences.

The most common side effects are temporary and related to the injection: swelling, redness, discoloration, bruising, or sensitivity at the injection site. Other mild side effects, such as pain, itching, palpable lumps, and swelling, usually resolve within a few days.

In rare cases, more severe side effects like granulomas, skin necrosis (especially in the frown line area), or delayed hypersensitivity reactions can occur. Notify your doctor if inflammation persists beyond a week.

Reactivation of cold sores may occur in some predisposed patients, and a preventative treatment will be prescribed if necessary.
